No. 9 Mastodons Unable to Fight Back Against No. 1 Loyola

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The ninth-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team was unable to comeback against top-ranked Loyola, falling in three sets. The Mastodons finished 19-25, 11-25, 20-25, dropping to 9-3 (3-1 MIVA), while the Ramblers improved to 9-0 (2-0 MIVA).
Loyola snaps the 'Dons seven-match home win streak, dating back to March 29, 2014, also against the Ramblers. IPFW is 3-3 against ranked teams this season, with all the losses against top-five teams at the time of play.
The Blue and White dropped five-straight points early in the opening set, going down 6-2. The 'Dons tried to climb back later in the set, earning four-consecutive points to cut the Loyola lead 19-16. Alex Harthaller led the Mastodons in the first set with four kills and a block.
The second set saw IPFW take a slim 3-1 lead early on, but the Ramblers earned four-straight points and would not give up the lead for the remainder of the set. Trying to climb back in the set, the 'Dons earned three-straight points to inch closer to Loyola, down 11-20. The Ramblers would finish the set on four-consecutive points. Luis Bertran earned four digs during the set.
The 'Dons took a 5-3 lead in the third set before Loyola took the next three points. With Loyola up 9-6, both teams would exchange the next 13 points, giving the Ramblers a 16-13 lead in the final set. Harthaller finished the third set with four kills, while Andrew Sellan and Gabriel Quinones each finished with three.
Harthaller led the 'Dons with eight kills, while Bertran earned nine digs. Ramon Burgos finished with four blocks.
The Mastodons have a short turnaround as they travel to No. 2 Lewis on Saturday, February 14 at 8 p.m.
