No. 9 Mastodons Fall in Top-15 MIVA Matchup

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The ninth-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team was unable to comeback against No. 12 Ohio State, falling in three sets. The Mastodons finished 18-25, 22-25, 12-25, dropping to 9-4 (3-2 MIVA), while the Buckeyes improved to 11-2 (5-0 MIVA).
The Mastodons took a narrow 9-8 lead in the first set, but the Buckeyes followed with seven-straight points to go up 15-9. IPFW fended off three-consecutive set points before falling to Ohio State 25-18 in the opening set. Gabe Quinones led the 'Dons with four kills in the first set, while Omar Rivera and Luis Bertran each recorded three digs. The first set saw the score tied eight times, with three lead changes.
The second set saw IPFW go up 4-2 early on, but the Buckeyes would reel off four-straight points to take the lead. Fighting back midway through the match, the Blue and White earned a 3-0 run, cutting the Ohio State lead to 13-11. The 'Dons would push back two set points with consecutive blocks, but eventually fell 25-22. Alex Harthaller and Andrew Sellan each had four kills, while Quinones and Bertran each earned four digs during the set.
The Mastodons kept it close early in the third set, reaching a 4-4 tie, but Ohio State would pull away during the set, eventually winning 25-12.
Quinones and Sellan each paced IPFW with eight kills, while Rivera earned 63 assists. Bertran finished with eight digs and Bryan Saunders recorded three blocks. The eight kills from Quinones tied his career best, set earlier in the year at Harvard on January 24.
The Mastodons host another MIVA match when they face McKendree on Saturday, February 21 in the Gates Center at 7 p.m.
