FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The ninth-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) IPFW men's volleyball team edged the McKendree Bearcats in five sets in a crucial MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) match. The Mastodons finished 25-13, 20-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-13, improving to 10-4, 4-2 (MIVA), while the Bearcats fell to 5-12, 0-9 (MIVA).
The Blue and White played with balanced attacking as Andrew Sellan paced the 'Dons with 20 kills during the match, while Alex Harthaller and Ramon Burgos each had double-digit kills. Burgos also finished with six blocks, while Luis Bertran and Sellan each had nine digs. Omar Rivera finished with 56 assists.
The Mastodons rushed to a 9-3 lead in the opening set, highlighted by an 8-0 run early on. While holding an 18-11 lead late, the Blue and White closed out the first set on a 6-2 run over the Bearcats. Sellan led IPFW with five kills, while Rivera and Burgos each had three blocks in the opening set.
The second set saw the 'Dons and Bearcats exchange points early on, tying at 11 a piece midway through. McKendree would then go on a 3-0 run and hold onto the lead throughout the set. The set saw the score tied eight times with two lead changes as Sellan and Harthaller each had four kills in the set.
The Blue and White came burst out to an early 7-3 lead in the third set following a 4-0 run. After going up 14-11, the 'Dons would earn three-straight points to extend their lead over the Bearcats. IPFW would wrap up the set on a 5-2 run, taking it 25-16 over McKendree. Burgos paced the 'Dons in the third set with four kills and three blocks.
The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair which saw the score tied 10 times. McKendree took an early 6-3 lead before IPFW battled back and tied it at nine. Both teams would trade points before the Bearcats took a 15-14 lead and held it for the remainder of the set. Harthaller lead IPFW in the fourth set, earning seven kills.
Both teams kept it close during the final set, splitting the first 16 points. The Mastodons would take the next four points and hold onto the lead for the rest of the match, taking the set 15-13. The final set saw the score tied eight times with two lead changes as Sellan led the way with five kills.
For the match, the Mastodons outscored the Bearcats 64-52, while hitting .331. IPFW held a 5-3 advantage in aces, while McKendree managed a 10-7 edge in blocks.
