WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The IPFW track and field team traveled to Purdue for the Fred Wilt Invitational on Saturday, February 14 for its second to last regular season indoor meet before the conference championships in two weeks.
Kiawna Cottrell continued her impressive first-year campaign, turning in another stellar performance—this time in the long jump. The freshman's mark of 5.38 meters (17-8) bested the program record jump of 5.22m (17-1.50), which she set just two weeks ago at the Ohio State Invitational. That came after the 5.09m (16-7.75) record mark she posted back in December at the IPFW Invitational in her first collegiate meet.
In an effort to keep Cottrell fresh for the league championships, head coach Mike Fruchey and assistant coach Tanisha Johnson has had her alternating between the running and field events each week. The strategy has proven advantageous for Cottrell, as she has performed well week in and week out, setting program records in every meet she's participated in except one.
Several other Mastodons had solid performances on the day, with several career-bests being set at the event.
In the 5,000 meter run, six 'Dons competed with four finishing in the top-10 and five of six setting either season and/or personal bests. The group was led by sophomore Rachel Kacer, who has had a solid second year and has only improved since she came to IPFW, as she placed sixth with a time of 19:06.72. Freshmen twin sisters Brittany and Breanna Fensler finished in seventh (19:13.08) and eighth (19:22.63), respectively, both crushing their previous career bests in the event. Junior Andrea Bell ran the race in a season-best time of 19.35.22 to come in 10th, while sophomore Cheryl Morris (20:46.18) and freshman Taylor Busch (21:31.92) also posted season-bests times at the meet.
IPFW also saw career marks set in the 400-meter dash, the 800-meter run and the mile. In the 400, freshman Jenna Quillen ran in the event for the first time this season in a time of 1:04.58 while another freshman, Elise Cobb, turned in her best time of her young career in the event with a time of 1:05.47. Both Mastodon runners in the 800-meter posted career times as Emily Roman and Jazmin Zavala recorded marks of 2:26.84 and 2:40.40, respectively.
In the mile, freshman Abbigayle Dunleavy bested her own career mark of 6:07.86 in the event with a 6:02.26. Roman (5:26.87) and freshman Kayla McGurk (5:33.86) also competed in the event in the first time this season while fellow freshman Sydney Strang posted a time of 6:00.25.
On the field events side of the meet, freshman Ashley Brown and sophomore Kyley Marano participated in the high jump, with both of their highest jumps coming at 1.54 meters (5-0.5). The mark was a season-best for Marano.
IPFW will finish its indoor regular season schedule next Friday, February 20 at the Ball State Open before heading to Fargo, N.D. for the Summit League Indoor Championships on February 27 and 28.
