FARGO, N.D. –The IPFW track and field team wrapped up the final day of what turned out to be a wild 2015 Summit League Indoor Championships for the team with three top-10 finishes and a broken program record in the 4x400 meter relay.
The weekend began with travel issues with canceled flights that led to a long bus ride and a middle-of-the-night arrival to Fargo. Then, a few of the girls came down with the flu. Despite the adversity, head coach Mike Fruchey was happy about the effort of his team.
"We ran into some issues that weren't conducive to competing," said Fruchey. "But I was proud of what we we're able to accomplish. We're young and it was good for them to get experience at the championships."
A day after just missing her own school record and personal-best time by 10 one-hundredths of a second in the preliminaries of the 800 meter run, Beard posted a time of 2:25.37 to place eighth in the finals. It was the second-consecutive year Beard finished in the top eight at the league championships in the event. The second-year middle distance runner followed that performance with a ninth-place finish in the mile with a time of 5:03.13.
Sisters Brittany and Breanna Fensler also competed in the mile, recording times of 5:24.92 and 5:33.21, respectively. Both times were personal bests for the freshmen in the event.
Fellow freshman Kiawna Cottrell, who set two more program records in the 200 meter and the 60 meter qualifying races on Friday, advanced to Saturday's finals in the 60 and placed sixth with a time of 7.86.
"I thought Kiawna had a great weekend," added Fruchey. "Finishing sixth in the 60 is great for a freshman and I thought she ran well."
Sophomore Kyley Marano and freshman Ashley Brown both competed in the high jump, recording duplicate jumps of 1.51 meters (4-11.50).
The 'Dons topped the weekend off on a strong note as the 4x400 meter relay team of Cottrell, Marano, Alexis Wygant and Kayla McGurk posted a 4:05.37 to best the program record of 4.05.66 set back in 2012.
IPFW will begin the outdoor track and field season on Friday, April 3 at the Miami of Ohio Invitational.
