Bertran Ties School Record in Win at Limestone

GAFFNEY, S.C. – Luis Bertran tied an IPFW school record in single match digs as the 14th-ranked (American Volleyball Coaches Association) men's volleyball team rolled to a 3-1 win at Limestone to wrap up a three-match Carolina swing. The Mastodons finished 26-28, 25-18, 25-17, 25-14, improving to 13-6, while the Saints fell to 8-13 on the year.
Bertran's 23 digs tied a school record, previously set by Mike Morici at Quincy on February 5, 2005. Additionally, Bertran moved into 11th all-time in Mastodon history with 596 career digs. Chris Gisslen (1997-2000) sits seven digs ahead of Bertran for the 10th most in IPFW history.
Andrew Sellan earned his second double-double of the season, sixth of his career, finishing with 19 kills and 14 digs while hitting .368. This was Sellan's third-straight match with at least 19 kills. Alex Harthaller finished with 14 kills, while Gabriel Quinones and Bryan Saunders each had nine.
The Mastodons fell behind 10-6 midway through the opening set, but would fight back with a 5-1 run to tie it at 11 apiece. The 'Dons continued to battle, taking a 24-22 lead late in the set after four-straight points. However, the Saints were able to fend off four set points and eventually take the opening set 28-26. Sellan recorded eight kills in the set, while Bertran notched five digs. The first set saw the score tied nine times, with four lead changes.
The Blue and White would see another close set early on as the 'Dons held a 14-12 lead midway through the second set. The Mastodons would pull away later in the set with three-straight points, giving them a 21-16 lead. IPFW wrapped up the set on a 7-2 run, including the final three points, finishing 25-18. Saunders Jordan Armstrong each earned three blocks in the set.
The third set saw both teams knotted at 11 midway through, but the Mastodons would pull away with an 11-3 run, highlighted with five-straight points, giving them a 22-14 lead late in the set. The Saints would try to climb back in the set, but IPFW would take it 25-17. Bertran earned 12 digs in the third set, while Harthaller earned six kills.
The Mastodons would burst out with an early 6-2 lead in the fourth set and would not slow down, eventually jumping to a 16-7 lead. Both teams would swap points the remainder of the set as IPFW wrapped up the final set 25-14.
For the match, the Mastodons held a 64-35 advantage in kills, while hitting .349 compared to the Saints' .158. IPFW dominated the defensive end, holding a 53-35 upper hand in digs, while edging Limestone 16-13 in blocks.
The Mastodons return to action when host Lourdes on Saturday, March 14. The match is set to begin in the Gates Center at 7 p.m.
