Mastodons Take Down Hawks in Four

QUINCY, Ill. – The IPFW men's volleyball team topped the Quincy Hawks in four sets Friday night. The Mastodons finished 25-22, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21, improving to 15-7, 5-4 (MIVA), while the Hawks fall to 10-9, 3-7 MIVA.
Andrew Sellan led the 'Dons with 13 kills, while Alex Harthaller followed closely behind with 12. Luis Bertran finished with 15 digs, while Ramon Burgos earned six blocks.
The Blue and White battled to an early 8-5 lead in the first set over Quincy, but would eventually be knotted at eight. After the Hawks closed within a point at 15-14, the Mastodons would earn three-straight points, going up 18-14. Quincy would keep fighting back, eventually going up 21-20. However, the 'Dons went on a 5-1 run, including the final three points of the opening set.
The Mastodons would be in another close fight during the second set, going up 10-9 midway through. However, the Hawks would take the next four points before swapping points with the 'Dons, making it 16-14. After falling behind 20-16, IPFW would take the next three points to pull within one and eventually tie the set at 23. However, the Hawks would take the final two points of the set, tying the match at one a piece.
The 'Dons saw another close set in the third, being tied with Quincy at seven early on. IPFW would create some space with a 5-1 run, making it 13-10, and eventually take a 15-11 lead in the set. The Mastodons earned an 8-2 run later on, making it 24-16, but the Hawks would fight off five set points, before falling 25-21.
The fourth set opened with a slim 7-5 Quincy lead, but the 'Dons fought back, eventually taking a 15-12 lead. The Blue and White managed to earn a 20-15 lead later on, but the Hawks continued to claw their way back in set, cutting the lead to 21-20. However, IPFW took the last three points to secure the final set.
For the match, Quincy edged IPFW 48-44 in kills, while the 'Dons held a 5-3 advantage in aces. The Hawks held a 46-39 upper hand in digs, while the Blue and White earned a 21-14 advantage in blocks.
The Mastodons remain on the road with another MIVA match at Lindenwood on March 21 at 8 p.m.
