Mastodons Sweep Lions in Close Sets

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The IPFW men's volleyball team swept the Lindenwood Lions in close set victories Saturday night. The Mastodons finished 25-21, 27-25, 34-32, improving to 16-7, 6-4 (MIVA), while the Lions fall to 8-8, 3-6 MIVA.
Andrew Sellan led the 'Dons with 12 kills and six digs, while Ramon Burgos followed closely behind with 10 kills and five blocks. Luis Bertran finished with seven digs, while Omar Rivera earned 37 assists.
The Blue and White fell behind early, 3-2, against the Lions, but responded with four-straight points during what would be a 7-2 run, eventually making it 9-5 IPFW. Lindenwood would fight back, cutting the Mastodon lead to 21-19, but the 'Dons wrapped up the opening set on a 5-2 run, finishing 25-21. Sellan, Burgos, and Bryan Saunders each earned four kills in the first set, while Bertran and Sellan each recorded four digs.
IPFW would fall behind early in the second set, 8-7, but continued to battle, eventually taking a 16-14 lead during a 5-1 run midway through the set. The 'Dons earned a slim 24-22 advantage, but the Lions held off two set points before IPFW took three of the last four points, grabbing the second set 27-25.
The Mastodons once again found themselves in an early hole, down 8-5, but a 7-1 run gave them a 12-9 advantage. Both teams would swap the next eight points before the Lions went on a four point run to take a 17-16 edge. From that point on, neither team would have a clear advantage as they continued to answer each other, point for point, until the end of the match. With IPFW down 32-31 in the set, the 'Dons fought back with three-consecutive points to avoid dropping the set, eventually taking the final set 34-32, to complete the sweep over Lindenwood. The final set saw the score tied 21 times with five lead changes, as Sellan earned six kills in the set, while Nick Smalter recorded four.
For the match, IPFW edged Lindenwood 50-48 in kills, while both teams split aces with three each. The Lions held a 28-26 upper hand in digs, while the Blue and White earned a 13-11 advantage in blocks.
The Mastodons remain on the road when they travel to No. 2 Loyola (Ill.) on March 26 at 8 p.m. The Blue and White then have a short turnaround as they host No. 3 Lewis for Senior Night on March 28 at 7 p.m. in the Gates Center.
