IPFW will need to beat the Golden Eagles twice in the double-elimination format in a day that will be broadcast on ESPN3 by MidCo Sports.
The Mastodons got the bulk of their production from the second half of the lineup, as the team's five through nine hitters went a combined 9-for-17 in the game, scoring all six of the team's runs.
Greg Kaiser went 2-for-3 on the day while Brock Logan, Shannon Baker, and Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece each went 2-for-4, with the ninth hitter – Jackson Boyce – going 1-for-2 with a pair of sacrifice bunts. Kaiser scored three times, while Baker drove in three.
Jake Weber improved to 4-2 on the season, while Miller picked up his first collegiate save in his first relief appearance with the Mastodons.
IPFW starter Dane Davis - in his first start of the 2015 season - walked two batters in the bottom of the first inning, but kept the Jackrabbits off the board. In the second Eric Danforth reached third base with one out, but a strikeout and fly-out ended the scoring threat.
Davis' success continued into the third where he retired SDSU in order, before getting lifted in the bottom of the fourth inning after surrendering two walks with a strikeout. IPFW closer Jake Weber came in relief of Davis and struck out the only two batters he faced in the inning.
During that same span, South Dakota State's Ryan Froom dominated IPFW through the first four innings, allowing just a walk through the first 13 batters that he faced in the contest.
The IPFW bats awoke in the top of the fifth inning, as Greg Kaiser opened the inning with the team's first base hit. Brock Logan followed with a fly ball that bounced off of the tall wall in left field, reaching second with his sixth double of the season, and scoring Kaiser for the game's first run.
A batter later Shannon Baker hit a line-drive home run over the wall in left field, his fifth homer of the season, putting IPFW ahead 3-0. Jonathan Valenzuela-Reece followed with a double in the left-center field gap, was pushed to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jackson Boyce, and scored on a groundout by Evan VanSumeren, staking the Mastodons to a 4-0 lead.
Weber worked himself out of a big jam in the bottom of the fifth inning, when he gave up a walk, single, and walk to load the bases with one out; however a groundout to third baseman Baker allowed the freshman to step on third base and throw across the infield to close out the double play and keep the shutout intact.
In the next half inning, Kaiser hit a one-out home run that left the Sioux Falls Stadium, Kaiser's 10th,of the season, tightening his grip on the single-season total base record with his 122nd,base, six more than the previous high mark.
In the sixth inning SDSU put runners on with a walk and a single, but Weber once again focused in, and got a looking strikeout and a groundout back to the mound, as the Mastodons kept the Jackrabbits off of the scoreboard.
The Jackrabbits were able to crack the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom of the seventh inning when Reid Clary singled home Paul Jacobson, closing the IPFW gap to 5-1.
IPFW manufactured a run in the eighth inning, as Kaiser drew a one-out walk, was moved to second on a single by Logan, and scored when Shannon Baker singled through the right side of the infield, scoring the Mastodon shortstop, and pushing the IPFW advantage to five at 6-1.
In the bottom half of the eighth inning Jacobson hit a one-out sacrifice fly, closing the gap to four at 6-2.
After a scoreless stop of the ninth inning by IPFW, SDSU made things interesting with a two-out rally that saw Eric Danforth and Al Robbins singled, before Anthony Schneider was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Newt Johnson followed with a three-run double to center field, closing the Mastodon advantage to just a single run at 6-5.
Needing an out, IPFW head coach Bobby Pierce and pitching coach Grant Birely brought in Miller for the game's final out – a strikeout – to close the door and put the Mastodons two wins away from the League Championship.
