Mastodons Fall Short in Strong Pitchers Duel
5/3/2015 4:26:00 PM | Baseball
FARGO, N.D. - In a game that saw IPFW starting pitcher Evan Miller strike out 10, the Mastodons fell victim to a late Bison rally that saw the hosts score two times with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pick up the win over IPFW.
Miller threw 124 pitches in the loss, striking out 10 and giving up just six hits and the two earned runs in the eighth inning. IPFW had eight hits, one each from Brandon Soat, Kendall Whitman, and Greg Kaiser.
The Mastodons jumped on the board quickly in the game, as Soat opened the contest with a double to left field, was pushed to third on a groundout by Evan VanSumeren, and scored on a Whitman groundout, putting the visitors ahead 1-0.
Over the next seven innings, neither team could find the scoreboard, as NDSU only got a runner as far as second base during the first seven innings of the game.
IPFW threatened in the fifth inning when Kaiser hit a one-out triple, but a strikeout and fly out ended the threat.
In the eighth inning, the hosts opened with a single, before being sacrificed to second base. A walk and single loaded the bases; however, the second out in the inning came on the next batter, a ground ball to shortstop Greg Kaiser, who threw home to get the lead runner and keep the Bison off the board. Brayden Resch was hit by a pitch to drive in the tying run, before John Skrbec struck out swinging, but the ball scooted away from catcher Zak Kellogg, allowing Ben Peterson to score the eventual game-winning run.
Miller struck out the next batter - his ninth of the game - but IPFW went down 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth to secure the NDSU sweep.
Bison starter David Ernst went the entire nine innings, striking out six and scattering three hits.
The Mastodons return to action on Wednesday, May 6, when the team travels to Muncie, Indiana, to take on the Ball State Cardinals in a mid-week non-conference game.
