FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's soccer team opened its season Tuesday night with a 3-0 win over cross-town rival Indiana Tech in an exhibition match. Andy O'Donoghue, Jacob Murphy, and Austin West all scored for the 'Dons in the scrimmage.
"It seemed like it took us awhile to get in a rhythm, but our core guys came out in the second half and led us tonight," head coach Mike Harper said. "It's not easy playing this many guys, but they did well. The newcomers were able to showcase their talent tonight."
O'Donoghue opened the scoring for the Blue and White in the 23rd minute of action following a cross from Jose Rodriguez. Fighting off two defenders, O'Donoghue was able to get his head on the ball, placing it just past the goaltender's left side.
Not long after the second half began, Murphy continued the Mastodons' scoring in the 68th minute. Newcomer Zach Tom knocked the ball across field to Murphy, who then placed the ball in the back of the net off of a low kick to the goalie's right.
West capped off the night for IPFW after fighting off multiple defenders in the ball in the box and kicking it in for the final score of the match.
Raphael Kotzock and Jorge Trujillo combined for a shutout as each made two stops. The Blue and White appeared to control much of the match, outshooting the Warriors 22-8 and 9-4 with shots on goal. Additionally, IPFW held a 9-3 upper-hand in corner kicks.
The Mastodons return to action Friday evening with an exhibition match against Michigan State in the Shindigz National Soccer Tournament.
