Johnson Named All-Tournament Team as 'Dons Fall Twice

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's volleyball team dropped its final two matches of the IPFW Invitational Sponsored by Hyatt Place, falling to UIC 3-1 (25-23, 26-28, 25-21, 25-23) and Eastern Illinois 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 28-26). The Mastodon's Somer Johnson was selected to the All-Tournament team.
In the opening match against UIC, the 'Dons held and early first-set advantage, but the Flames used an 8-2 run to take the lead and eventually the set. IPFW never trailed in the second set as the Flames pushed them to extra points.
The third set saw a battle as the two sides exchanged six leads and 18 tie scores. With the score knotted at 21, UIC scored the final four points to take the frame. The final set was also tightly contested with 14 tie scores and five lead changes with the biggest lead for either team coming with the 'Dons up 5-2. With the score tied at 20, the Flames scored back-to-back points and eventually taking the set and the game.
Johnson led IPFW in the match with 20 kills to go along with nine digs. Sarah Heckman and Lauren Hoffman each added 11 kills. Madison Jaqua dished out a match-high 49 assists for the Mastodons.
Natasha Medic finished with a match-high eight blocks while Olivia Hahn led the 'Dons with 14 digs.
In the nightcap, the Mastodons took an early lead on Eastern Illinois, but seven straight points by the Panthers was too much to overcome in the opening set. With the score tied 17-17 in the second set, the Panthers scored seven straight to take the frame. IPFW fought back in the third set, scoring the first six points thanks to a pair of aces from Hahn. The Mastodons held the lead 24-23 but EIU scored six of the final eight points to take the match.
Johnson again led the IPFW offensive attack, finishing with a match-high 19 kills and adding a team-high nine digs. Jaqua dished out 25 assists in the match and had five digs. Defensively, Natalie Seiler ended the night with a match-high four blocks, including two solo.
Eastern Illinois ended the tournament 3-0 to claim the title while UIC finished as runner-up via tiebreaker as UIC, IPFW, and Central Michigan all finished 1-2.
