Double-Double by Johnson and Jaqua Not Enough for 'Dons
9/1/2015 11:26:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - A pair of double-doubles from Somer Johnson and Madison Jaqua were not enough to power the IPFW women's volleyball team past Western Michigan as the Mastodons fell 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20). The loss drops the 'Dons to 1-3 on the season.
Johnson finished the night with her second double-double of the season with 22 kills to go along with 14 digs. Jaqua earned her first career double-double dished out 42 assists while adding 10 digs. Natalie Seiler finished in double-digits with 10 kills and adding four blocks.
Defensively, Olivia Hahn led the Mastodons with 14 digs while Natasha Medic put down five blocks, including two solo.
IPFW took the opening point of the match but the Broncos responded with the next seven as the 'Dons were unable to close the gap. A four-point Western Michigan run at the start of the second set had the Mastodons behind early. With IPFW trailing 17-16, the 'Dons scored three straight to take a 19-17 lead before Johnson closed it out with a kill.
The third set again saw WMU take an early lead, but the Mastodons responded. Down 17-13, the 'Dons used a five-point swing to take the lead. IPFW continued to lead 22-21 but the Broncos closed out the set scoring the final four points.
The final set saw IPFW take the early lead and use a three-point run to claim a 16-14 advantage. Western Michigan responded with five consecutive points that the 'Dons were unable to recover from.
IPFW travels to the Hampton Inn Invitational host by Bowling Green September 4-5. The Mastodons will take on Loyola Chicago in the opening match at 4:30 p.m.
