Strong Effort Sees Mastodons Fall 2-1 to Penguins
9/11/2015 10:42:00 PM | Women's Soccer
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A strong offensive and defensive effort fell just short for the IPFW women's soccer team, falling to the Youngstown Penguins by a 2-1 score on Friday evening at Farmers National Bank Field.
"It is difficult to suffer another loss on the season, but our second half was possibly the brightest we have seen the team play all season," said IPFW head coach Jason Burr. "Credit to Youngstown State for getting two goals in the first half, but our effort in the final 45 minutes gave us some great opportunities to equalize. We had terrific play from players coming off of the bench. Kiley Dunning played huge in the second half and came up with a big save on a penalty kick to keep us in the game. Andi Lazzerini came in and made an immediate impact in the first half, and Chani Warfield coming in to solidify our back line was terrific."
IPFW (0-7),got its goal in the game from Lazzerini, while Kallianne Mogler picked up the assist. Rachel Good led the Mastodons with three shots, while Lazzerini had two. Both Haley Lydon and Dunning had two saves in 45 minutes of action between the pipes.
The Penguins (3-4) jumped out quickly, scoring a goal just 12 minutes into the match, before the Mastodons picked up the equalizer nearly 12 minutes later when Mogler crossed the ball into the upper middle of the field, where a waiting Lazzerini put it into the back of the net. The tie score would only last for five and a half minutes, before YSU picked up the eventual game-winning goal, 29:02 into the match.
The game, which started as an offensive slugfest quickly turned into a defensive stalemate, as neither team would be able to find the back of the net for the final 60 minutes of the contest.
Youngstown State drew a foul in the penalty box late in the game; however, Kaite Hackos' attempt was stopped by Dunning, and keeping the Mastodons with the one-goal deficit; however, IPFW would be unable to squeeze off a shot over the final three minutes, securing the one-goal win for the hosts.
"If we see this type of effort throughout the rest of the season we will start to see results going our way," said Burr.
Youngstown State out-shot IPFW 16-9, while the Mastodons held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
IPFW returns to action on Sunday, September 13 when the team travels to Indianapolis to take on the Butler Bulldogs (5-2-1) in a 1 p.m. kickoff at the Butler Bowl.
