Mastodons Drop Opening Match of Miami Invitational

OXFORD, Ohio - It was an afternoon of career-highs for the IPFW women's volleyball team, but for the second time in three days the Mastodons dropped a five-set match, falling to Green Bay (19-25, 25-19, 25-16, 26-28, 15-13). The match was the first for the 'Dons in the Miami Invitational Presented by Best Western.
Somer Johnson had a career- and match-high 26 kills to go along with eight digs. Sarah Heckman added had a career-high with 16 kills and tied for the team lead with three blocks, two solo. Nicole Rightnowar went for 15 kills while Madison Jaqua dished out 50 assists for the Mastodons.
Defensively, Olivia Hahn led the 'Dons with 21 digs, Elizabeth Britner tied a career-high with nine and Este Stoffel contributed with six.
With the score tied 14-14 in the opening frame, IPFW used a 10-2 run to hold off a late Phoenix charge to take the set. A three-point run deep in the set for the 'Dons was not enough to overcome an early deficit in the second.
Trailing 5-4 in the third set, the Mastodons used a pair of four-point runs to take a 12-7 lead. With the Mastodons leading 15-13, Green Bay fought back to close out the set on a 12-1 advantage.
Both teams held multi-point leads in the fourth set as to two sides remained tied 10 times in the frame. In the end, it was Rightnowar with her second career ace to send it to a decisive fifth set.
The 'Dons trailed early in the final set, before battling back to tie the score 11-11. The Phoenix tallied the next two points as the Mastodons fought off one set point, but were unable to do so a second time.
The final day of the tournament will have IPFW taking on NKU at 10 a.m. follow by host Miami at 7 p.m.
