Hall and Heckman Named All-Tournament as Mastodons Split

OXFORD, Ohio - The IPFW women's volleyball team closed out the Miami Invitational Presented by Best Western by splitting its matches, sweeping Northern Kentucky to open the day 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 26-24) before falling to tournament host Miami 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-19). Sarah Heckman and Monica Hall were named to the All-Tournament team for the Mastodons.
Against NKU, Somer Johnson went for her seventh double-double of the season, leading the 'Dons with a match-high 10 kills and a team-high 11 digs. Madison Jaqua had her fifth double-double of the year with a match-high 29 assists and 10 digs.
Nicole Rightnowar chipped in eight kills and six digs against the Norse. Natalie Seiler added seven kills, to go along with a match-high five blocks and a team-high two aces.
IPFW began its match against NKU on a 7-2 run and didn't look back, taking the opening set by seven points. The 'Dons took an early 6-2 lead in the second set before the Norse came back to tie the score at 16-16. The Mastodons bounced back to close out the frame with a 9-3 advantage.
With the score tied 22-22 in the third set, NKU scored twice, but the Mastodons fought off a pair of set points to lock the score 24-24. Johnson put the match in the book with back-to-back kills to pick up the sweep.
In the nightcap, Rightnowar and Johnson led the team with eight kills. Hall added in seven for the 'Dons while hitting .545 for the match. Jaqua had a career-high six kills with a .857 hitting percentage to go along with a match-high 27 assists. Johnson also led the Mastodons with 13 digs while Olivia Hahn added 12.
IPFW jumped out to the lead in the opening set 15-12. Miami answered with seven straight points to take the lead for good. The 'Dons were down 5-1 early in the second set. After calling a timeout, the Mastodons came out on a 4-1 run to close the deficit to 6-5, but that would be as close as they could get.
The final set saw the 'Dons fall behind 5-1 but they fought back, tying the score at 11-11. The Redhawks responded by scoring five consecutive points to regain the lead and go on to take the win.
IPFW returns to action opening Summit League play on September 25 by hosting Denver at 7 p.m.
