TULSA, Okla. - The IPFW women's basketball team had a chance to win it in the final seconds, but the Mastodons were unable to convert as they fell at Oral Roberts 61-59.
Kamilah Carter had a game-high 19 points for the 'Dons, while tying for the team lead with two assists and two steals. KeShyra McCarver, De'Jour Young, and Rachel Rinehart all finished with eight points. Rinehart also tied a season-high with seven rebounds. Keanna Gary had her consecutive game streak of 10 or more rebounds snapped, but still finished with a team-high eight.
IPFW opened the game with a pair of three's from McCarver and Carter, but those would be its only points in the opening quarter. The Mastodons battled back in the second, tying the game at 24-24, before Oral Roberts got a layup from Kaylan Mayberry with five seconds remaining in the half to lead 26-24.
In the third quarter, the 'Dons gained a one-point lead, 32-31, on a jumper from Carter. The Golden Eagles answered on their next possession to take the lead for good. ORU led by as many as eight in the period, before Gary ended the quarter converting on the and-one opportunity as IPFW trailed 46-42.
The Mastodons closed the deficit to a single point on four different occasions in the fourth quarter, but were unable to take a lead. Young connected on a 3-pointer with 19.4 seconds remaining. Oral Roberts missed both of its ensuing free throws, but IPFW could not connect on a jumper with six seconds to play as ORU iced it with a final free throw.
On the day, the 'Dons went 22-of-61 (36.1%) from the field, while hitting 6-of-13 (46.2%) from downtown, and 9-of-12 (75%) at the charity stripe.
IPFW returns to action on January 21 at South Dakota for an 8 p.m. ET tipoff.
