Men’s Volleyball Falls at Saint Francis to Begin Opening Road Trip
1/22/2016 9:52:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
LORETTO, Pa. – The IPFW men's volleyball team was unable to grab an advantage over the Red Flash as the Mastodons fell in straight sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) to begin their season-opening road trip at Saint Francis (Pa.).
Luis Bertran earned a season high 14 digs while David Frazee continued to inflate his season hitting percentage, hitting .500 (6-1-10) against the Red Flash.
The 'Dons took an early lead in the opening set, going up 10-7, but the Red Flash continued to fight back, eventually knotting the score at 17. From then on, the Blue and White were unable to gain momentum as Saint Francis finished the set on an 8-3 run.
IPFW opened the second set going up 5-3, but the Red Flash went on a 6-1 run to make it 8-6. Once again the 'Dons tried to gain momentum, but Saint Francis went toe-to-toe with IPFW, swapping the next 12 points to give the Red Flash a 14-12 lead. The Mastodons took a 4-1 run to tie the set at 16, forcing SFU to take a timeout. Following the timeout, Saint Francis ended the set on a 9-4 run.
The 'Dons continued to battle in the third set taking the first two points, but the Red Flash continued to cause problems with a 5-1 run early on. Once again swapping points and trailing 14-11, IPFW looked to gain control of the third set when they managed a 4-2 run. However, during the run, some confusion came up after the 'Dons were initially rewarded a point on what appeared to be a foot-fault from the Red Flash. After the side referees talked at center court, no point was awarded and the play had to be redone, eventually won once again by the Mastodons. Still, Saint Francis continued to fight, eventually ending the match on a 5-3 run.
IPFW continues its Pennsylvania road trip as the 'Dons face No. 10 Penn State on January 23 at 7 p.m.
