Sellan Reaches Career Milestone as IPFW Falls at No. 10 Penn State
1/23/2016 10:04:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
UNIVERSITY PARK Pa. – Andrew Sellan earned his 1,000th career kill and tied a match high 17 kills as the IPFW men's volleyball team fell to 10th-ranked Penn State on Saturday night (26-28, 17-25, 15-25).
Sellan led the Mastodons with 17 kills, hitting .371, while adding eight digs, three blocks, and an ace. As a team, the 'Dons dominated the net, earning 20 total blocks to the Nittany Lions' three. Of the IPFW blocks, Graydon Schroeder earned six total.
The Blue and White got out to a strong start, nabbing the first three points of the opening set and taking a 5-2 lead. PSU would fight back with four-straight points to tie the set at seven. With the Mastodons trailing 19-16 in the set, IPFW looked to briefly gain momentum with a 4-1 run, followed shortly afterwards with another 4-1 run to make it 24-25 Penn State. IPFW had a chance to put the set away late, but errors doomed the 'Dons as Penn State survived the opening set 28-26.
The 'Dons and Lions went toe-to-toe to open the second set, being tied at eight early on. However, PSU would take the lead and refuse to relinquish it. IPFW would come within three, 18-15, following a 4-2 run, but PSU would eventually take the set 25-17 going into the break.
For the second-straight set, IPFW and Penn State traded points to a 7-6 Nittany Lion lead before PSU gained some space between both squads. The Mastodons would get within striking distance, cutting the PSU lead to 11-8, but the Lions continued to prevent any major momentum swing, taking the third set 25-15.
The Mastodons return to action when they travel to Fairfax, Virginia on January 29 at 7 p.m. IPFW will then travel north to Newark, New Jersey the following night to face its third-straight EIVA opponent, taking on NJIT at 7 p.m.
