1/29/2016 10:20:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FAIRFAX, Va. – A strong defensive showing helped lead the IPFW men's volleyball team to a sweep at George Mason (25-18, 26-24, 28-26) Friday night. As a team, the Mastodons earned 19 total blocks with 31 digs. With the win, IPFW ted its longest winning-streak against George Mason at four matches. The Blue and White had two previous four-match winning-streaks against the Patriots in 1989-90 and 1996-00.
Michael Keegan and Graydon Schroeder each nabbed four while Keegan added nine digs. Additionally, David Frazee earned five blocks. Andrew Sellan led the 'Dons offensively with a team high 20 kills, hitting .389.
With nine digs during the match, Luis Bertran moved into sole possession of fourth-place in IPFW career digs, passing Raul Papaleo (747). Bertran's 756 career digs is 60 shy of tying All-American Jay Golsteyn for the most career digs in program history (816). Bertran is 15 digs shy of tying former U.S. gold medalist Lloy Ball for third in IPFW career digs (771).
The Blue and White opened the match with three-straight points, helping the 'Dons jump to a 12-5 lead. George Mason tried to climb back, eventually cutting the Mastodon lead to 18-15 before the 'Dons finished the set on a 7-3 run. The 'Dons hit .318 in the opening set, led by Sellan (.600) and Tony Price (.429).
The Mastodons once again earned an early lead, going up 4-1 in the second set. The Patriots would battle back to tie the set at eight before the teams swapped points, before GMU took a 12-11 lead. The 'Dons would gain the next six points to gain momentum. The Patriots had a chance to win the second set following a big comeback against the 'Dons, but IPFW would fend off a set point to send it to extras, eventually winning 26-24.
Following the break between sets, George Mason would take a 5-3 lead in the third. The Blue and White would tie the set at eight apiece before trading the next eight points, being tied at 12. The Mastodons would take the next five points to gain momentum with a 16-12 lead over GMU. For the second-consecutive match, the Patriots would take a 24-23 lead before the 'Dons fought off a set point. Each team would continue to fight back and forth until the Blue and White eventually took the final set 28-26 to complete the sweep. Sellan led the 'Dons with nine kills in the third set while Keegan earned five digs.
The Mastodons continue their east coast road swing with a trip up to Newark, New Jersey, to face NJIT on Saturday, January 30 at 7 p.m.
