Mastodons Complete Comeback in Thrilling Five Set Win
1/30/2016 10:08:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
NEWARK, N.J. –The IPFW men's volleyball team grinded out a thrilling five-set comeback to top NJIT in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday night. Tony Price led the Mastodons offensively with a career high 20 kills, hitting .417 (20-5-36), while adding six digs.
Michael Keegan earned 41 assists as David Frazee hit .364 for the match (6-2-11) with four total blocks, and Luis Bertran nabbed 10 digs.
A Mastodon win looked bleak late in the fourth set as the Blue and White trailed 20-16 following four-straight points from the Highlanders during their 7-2 run. With the 'Dons needing a win in the fourth set to extend the match, two errors from NJIT were enough to spark IPFW as the Blue and White went on a 9-2 to end the fourth set, capped off with a block from Frazee and Austin Neace.
Entering the deciding fifth set, the Mastodons started with a 7-3 lead. The Highlanders would battle back to cut the IPFW lead to 11-9, but the 'Dons were still riding high from the fourth set momentum swing, eventually taking the fifth set 15-11. Andrew Sellan was a key piece in the final set as he hit .833, earning five kills on six attempts.
In the opening set of the match, IPFW and NJIT fought back and forth to eventually be knotted at nine each. At that point, the Mastodons went on a 10-3 run and refused to let the Highlanders back in the set, winning 25-19. Price was nearly perfect in the first set, hitting .750 with three kills on four attempts.
The second set wasn't as kind to the 'Dons as NJIT took a 15-8 lead following a 7-1 run. IPFW would try to climb back in it earning three-straight points late in the set to make it 21-16, but it wasn't enough as NJIT eventually took the second set 25-18. Price would again hit .750 during the set, this time gaining six kills on eight attempts.
Once again, IPFW would find itself in a hole during the third set as NJIT leaped to an early lead with multiple runs of three-straight points. For the second-consecutive set, the 'Dons would earn small runs to cut the lead, but eventually fell 25-17 in the set.
The Mastodons open league play in the Midwestern Volleyball Association (MIVA) when they travel to Ohio State on February 4 at 7 p.m. IPFW will then follow its match with a trip to McKendree for a MIVA match on Saturday, February 6, also at 7 p.m.
