Mastodons Drop Tough One on the Road
1/23/2016 6:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Josie Fisher's team-high 21 points were not enough help the IPFW women's basketball team pick up the road victory as the Mastodons fell at North Dakota State 94-85.
Fisher hit 9-of-15 from the floor to finish with her team-high 21 points. Fisher tied for the team lead with six rebounds while adding two steals, two assists, and the lone Mastodon block. Rachel Rinehart scored 18 points, including 8-of-9 at the free throw line. Kamilah Carter also finished in double figures with 17 points to go along with a team-high four assists and three steals.
After IPFW scored the first two buckets of the game, the two sides exchanged five-point runs in the opening quarter. The two teams again traded a pair of runs midway through the second quarter as the 'Dons led 32-27 with 3:35 to go. NDSU hit a pair of free throws with eight seconds left in the half, but Fisher drove the length of the court and hit a layup with less than two seconds to go, giving IPFW a 38-36 lead.
With the Mastodons up four in the third period, an 8-2 run by the Bison gave them a two-point lead. The 'Dons fought back with an 8-2 advantage of their own to regain the lead with 2:38 left. A Fisher layup with 11 seconds left in the period saw IPFW take one-point lead, but NDSU connected on a triple as time expired to go up 60-58.
Rinehart sank a pair of free throws at the 7:59 mark of the fourth to pull the 'Dons to within one, but the Bison responded with an 11-2 advantage that IPFW was unable to fight back from.
The Mastodons finished the game shooting 32-of-77 (41.6%) from the field, including 2-of-17 (11.8%) on three-point attempts, and 19-of-23 (82.6%) at the free throw line.
IPFW returns home to host Omaha on January 28 for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
