IPFW Rallies Late For Road Win At Oral Roberts 68-63

TULSA, Okla. -- Redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis scored a game-high 28 points to lead IPFW to a 68-63 come-from-behind men's college basketball Summit League road victory at Oral Roberts University on Thursday night at the Mabee Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Redshirt-freshman John Konchar/Chicago, Ill. added 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for his fifth consecutive and eighth double-double this season for the visiting Mastodons (17-6, 6-2 Summit League), who rallied from a late seven-point deficit with a game-ending 16-4 run over the final 5:52. Obi Emegano led the host Golden Eagles (11-12, 3-6 Summit League) with 27 points, including 20 in the first half. IPFW returns to Fort Wayne to host Western Illinois University at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center Sunday afternoon, January 31, at 2 p.m.
IPFW, ranked No. 23 in this week's The CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, scored the first five points of the game, getting a three-point field goal from Konchar and two free throws by senior Joe Reed/Greenwood to lead 5-0 at 17:54. The Mastodons still led 13-7 at 14:28 following a jumper by Landis, before ORU used a 20-2 run to take a 27-15 advantage at 5:53, getting 14 quick points from Emegano. IPFW closed to within 28-23 at 2:49 after back-to-back three-pointers from Landis, but the Golden Eagles took their largest lead of the period at 36-23 with 1:08 on the first-half clock via a pair of free throws by Emegano. It was 36-27 at the intermission with Emegano (20) and Landis (14) leading their respective teams.
IPFW outscored ORU 12-5 to start the second half to close to within 41-39 at 15:47, getting 10 quick points from senior Michael Calder/Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (6) and Konchar (4). The Golden Eagles responded with five-straight points to lead 46-39 at 14:05, but the Mastodons battled back to within 50-48 at 10:28 after seven-straight points from Landis, including a three-pointer. ORU stretched the margin back to seven at 59-52 with 5:55 on the clock, but IPFW, as it has all season, refused to lose and responded with a decisive game-ending outburst for the road triumph. The Mastodons scored 10 unanswered points to lead 62-59 at 2:45, the go-ahead basket courtesy of a three-pointer by Konchar, who scored four of the points along with six-straight from junior DeAngelo Stewart/Detroit, Mich., including the game-tying layup at 3:44. Emegano made two free throws at 2:21 to make it 62-61, but Landis scored on consecutive jumpers, adding a late free throw along with one by Calder, to secure the outcome as IPFW overcame its largest deficit (13 points) of the season while winning.
Landis led IPFW with his game-high 28 points, making 3-6 three-pointers and 7-8 free throws, adding a game-high five assists. Konchar added his 16 points and game-high 14 rebounds for his eighth collegiate double-double, fifth-straight, along with a game and career-high five steals. Stewart finished with 11 points, while Calder had seven points and seven rebounds. IPFW shot 41% (22-54) from the field, including 38% (8-21) on three-pointers and 62% (16-26) at the free throw line.
Emegano led Oral Roberts with his 27 points, making 13-15 free throws. ORU shot 33% (21-63) from the field, including 25% (5-20) on three-pointers and 80% (16-20) at the line.
IPFW was playing ORU for the 16th time overall ad the Golden Eagles lead the series, 10-6; however, the Mastodons have now won three of the past four meetings, including two this year.
IPFW has equaled its finest start to a season as a Division I program (2001-02) with its 17-6 record. The 2013-14 team also began 17-6 and was 18-6 before finishing 25-11, the program's best DI season to date.
