FORT WAYNE, Ind. – In Ryan "Rock" Perrotte's first match as the IPFW men's volleyball head coach, the Mastodons swept Alderson Broaddus in three sets as they opened up their 2016 season at home (25-22, 25-18, 25-22).
Andrew Sellan started the season off with an impressive game-high 17 kills and a .542 hitting percentage, while Michael Keegan began his collegiate career with a game-high 32 assists. After the Battlers took an early 6-2 lead in the first set, the teams went point-for-point before the Mastodons pulled away with three-straight, eventually taking the set 25-22. Sellan made eight kills for IPFW in the first set alone.
IPFW controlled the second set as they got off to an 11-6 lead. The Battlers got within three, 17-14, but Scott McNerney picked up two service aces to ensure the Mastodons second set victory, 25-18. Nick Smalter dished out four digs in the second set, while Sellan picked up four more kills.
The Battlers kept it close in the final set, taking a 12-11 lead midway through and eventually being knotted with the 'Dons at 16 apiece. The Blue and White would then take a 9-6 run to cap off the third set 25-22. Bertran earned four of his six digs in the final set, while Sellan, Smalter, David Frazee, and Graydon Schroeder each picked up a block.
IPFW will return to the court January 9 to take on nationally ranked Stanford. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. on Arnie Ball Court.
