Mastodons Unable to Complete Comeback against #13 Stanford

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – IPFW men's volleyball was unable to complete a comeback as the Mastodons dropped a thrilling four set home match to No. 13 Stanford (26-28, 29-27, 22-25, 26-28).
Luis Bertran finished with 10 digs, bringing his career total to 709, surpassing former teammate Eddie Rivera (707) for fifth-place all-time in IPFW career digs.
Andrew Sellan earned a match-high 22 kills, tying his career-high against Lewis from March 2015. Michael Keegan had a tied Stanford's James Shaw with match-high 49 assists, while earning three service aces. David Frazee earned a career-high 10 kills, while Graydon Schroeder added nine kills and a match-high eight blocks.
The Blue and White took the first point of the match and refused to give up the lead until Stanford fought back to knot the opening set at 15. The Cardinal stole the lead, 17-16, following two errors from the 'Dons. IPFW fought off three set points before eventually falling 28-26 in the opening set. Schoeder made is presence known at the net , serving up five blocks in the set.
Stanford opened the second set strong, leading IPFW 16-11, before the 'Dons went on an 8-2 run, highlighted by four kills from Sellan. Once again the Mastodons needed to fend off a Cardinal set point to stay alive, but the Blue and White prevailed in the second set marathon, taking it 29-27. Sellan led the way with eight kills, three digs, and a block in the set, while Bertran and Tony Price added three digs of their own.
The 'Dons fell behind to open the third set as Stanford went on a 7-1 run, before IPFW stormed back to pull within three at 10-7. A 5-1 run midway through the set to cut the Stanford lead to 19-17, before the Mastodons ultimately fell 25-22. Sellan earned seven kills and a block in the third set.
The fourth set opened as a back-and-forth affair with the 'Dons taking an early 4-3 lead. After falling behind 10-8, the Blue and White took three-straight points to reclaim the lead. Both teams would go point-for-point through most of the set until the first set point came for the 'Dons at 24-23. Each team split the next four points to serve up free volleyball for the third time of the night, but the Cardinal eventually took the set 28-26.
IPFW returns to Arnie Ball Court with a pair of matches against Sacred Heart and Harvard on Friday, January 15, and Saturday, January 16, respectively. The match against Sacred Heart is set for 7 p.m., while Harvard is set for 4 p.m.
