Atkins Leads Mastodons in Final Non-League Home Game

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne women's basketball team closed out the home portion of its non-league schedule as the Mastodons fell to Coastal Carolina 72-57.
Zaria Atkins led the 'Dons with a career-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting. KeShyra McCarver also finished in double figures with 12 points. De'Jour Young had a team-high seven rebounds to go along with eight points. Anna Lappenküper finished with a team-high three assists.
Early in the first quarter, the two sides traded extended runs as Coastal Carolina scored six straight and the Mastodons responded with an 8-0 advantage. The Chanticleers scored back-to-back baskets to end the first on top 20-16.
The Fort Wayne offense was unable to get going in the second period, as the 'Dons were held off the scoreboard for 7:03 as Costal Carolina went on a 10-0 run. McCarver drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer, but the Mastodons trailed 35-27 at halftime. The Chanticleers used a 10-2 stretch midway through the third quarter to push their lead to 15 points, as the 'Dons were unable to pull closer than nine down the stretch.
The Mastodons finished 22-for-56 (39.3%) from the field, 1-of-8 (12.5%) on three-point attempts and 12-for-15 (80%) at the free throw line.
Fort Wayne begins a seven-game road trip when it travels to Kent State for a 7 p.m. game on November 30.
