Mastodons Unable to Overcome Quiet First Quarter Shooting

KENT, Ohio - The Fort Wayne women's basketball team out-scored Kent State in three of four quarters, but the Mastodons were unable to overcome a slow start as they fell 66-55.
De'Jour Young and Rachel Rinehart led the 'Dons with 12 points on the night. The duo also led the team with two steals. Zaria Atkins also went for double-digits with 10 points. Selena Lozada led the way on the boards with six rebounds to go along with eight points. Atkins, Rinehart and Peyton Fallis all finished with two assists to lead the team.
The Mastodons offense struggled early as Fort Wayne was able to muster one field goal in the first quarter as Kent State closed out the period on a 22-3 advantage. Despite out-scoring the Golden Flashes in the second quarter, the 'Dons trailed 40-23 at the half.
Fort Wayne capped off the first half and began the second with a 16-4 advantage during a stretch of 5:17 and out-score Kent State by four in the third quarter. The Mastodons used a 9-4 advantage to begin the fourth quarter, closing the deficit to 11 with 6:59 to play, but were unable to cut it to single-digits.
On the night, the 'Dons shot 18-of-50 (36%) from the field, 5-of-12 (41.7%) beyond the arc and 14-of-18 (77.8%) at the free throw line.
Fort Wayne travels to Illinois for an 8 p.m. ET tipoff on Friday, December 2.
