Mastodons Drop Defensive Battle to Big Ten Foe Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - In a game that turned into a defensive battle, the Fort Wayne women's basketball team was unable to come back against Big Ten opponent Illinois, dropping the road game 56-33.
De'Jour Young led the Mastodons with 11 points and two assists to go along with five rebounds. Anna Lappenküper added seven points for the 'Dons. Rachel Rinehart grabbed a game- and career-high 10 rebounds. KeShyra McCarver finished the night with six points and six rebounds.
The Mastodons fell behind early as Illinois out-scored Fort Wayne 16-5 in the first quarter. The 'Dons responded by beginning the second period with six straight points, cutting the deficit to five. The Fighting Illini closed out the half with a 10-4 advantage as the Mastodons trailed 28-17.
The Fort Wayne offense had a tough time in the third quarter. The 'Dons were only able to muster one field goal in the period as Illinois pushed its lead back to double-digits for good with a 7-0 run to end the quarter.
For the game the Mastodons finished 10-of-40 (25%) from the floor, 2-of-11 (18.2%) beyond the arc and 11-of-15 (73.3%) at the charity stripe.
Fort Wayne continues its road trip when it travels to Western Michigan for a 7 p.m. game on Tuesday, December 6.
