IPFW Falls to No. 14 Lewis to Open Homecoming Weekend
2/19/2016 10:06:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's volleyball team was unable to capitalize on Andrew Sellan's hot night of hitting as the Mastodons fell in straight sets (23-25, 19-25, 22-25) to No. 14 Lewis. The 'Dons fall to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) play.
Sellan led the Blue and White with 17 kills, hitting .303 (17-7-33), while picking up six digs and two aces. Michael Keegan nabbed 38 assists and David Frazee earned three total blocks.
Luis Bertran inched closer to the IPFW career digs record, earning 11 digs against the Flyers. Bertran is now one dig shy of tying All-American Jay Golsteyn's 816 career digs mark, set from 1986-89.
Both teams traded points to open the match as it was tied nine-all midway through the opening set. After going down two points against the Flyers, the Mastodons would reel off three-straight points to take a 14-13 lead. IPFW would look to take control of the match following four-straight points later on, giving the 'Dons a 21-17 lead late in the first set. However, Lewis tie it back up with four points of their own. The Mastodons looked to close out the opening set when they took a 23-22 lead, but Lewis would earn the final three points of the set, winning 25-23.
The second set would start in similar fashion to the first as the teams were tied at nine each midway through. IPFW would take an 11-9 lead, but lose momentum following four-straight points from the Flyers. The 'Dons would continue to battle as they came within a point of tying, 16-15, but Lewis would continue to extend its lead, eventually taking the second set 25-19.
In a must-win set for the 'Dons, IPFW took a slight edge over Lewis early on, going up 4-3. After going down 9-5, the Mastodons would earn the next three points to get within one of the Flyers. IPFW would eventually fight back to know the set at 15 before Lewis regained an edge, going up 22-19. From there on out, each team would trade points as the Flyers took the final set 25-22.
The Mastodons have a short turnaround as they host No. 8 Loyola on Saturday, February 20 at 3 p.m., for Homecoming. Sellan will be honored prior to the match, being recognized for his 1000th career kill which was earned at No. 10 Penn State on January 23.
