Bertran Breaks Career Digs Record During Homecoming Match
2/20/2016 5:32:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – With six digs against No. 8 Loyola Chicago, Luis Bertran of the IPFW men's volleyball team broke the school career digs record, originally set by All-American Jay Golsteyn from 1986-89. After 27 years, the former All-American's mark of 816 digs is officially bumped down as Bertran's record now sits at 821. However, the Mastodons were unable to top a ranked Ramblers team, falling in straight sets (23-25, 22-25, 19-25).
Offensively, Tony Price led the 'Dons with 10 kills, hitting .364 (10-2-22), while adding seven digs. Alex Dickmann's eight kills set a new personal high, while Andrew Sellan finished with seven digs and kills.
The Blue and White came out firing in the opening set as the 'Dons earned an early 7-3 lead. Loyola would fight back to eventually take a 16-14 edge, but the Mastodons would continue to battle back, taking the next four points. IPFW looked to take control of the match after going up 22-21, but the Ramblers were too much, eventually taking the set 25-23.
In similar fashion to the first set, the 'Dons would earn an early lead, going up 6-3. IPFW would eventually take an 11-9 lead midway through before Loyola fought back with three-straight points. After going down 22-18, the Mastodons followed their timeout with three-consecutive points to come within one of the Ramblers. Once again, Loyola would pull away late to take the set 25-22.
IPFW saw a tall task ahead after going down 7-1 to open the third set. Later in the set, the 'Dons would take a 10-6 run to pull within three, but Loyola reeled off the final three points of the match to take the set 25-19.
The Blue and White return to action when they host Quincy on Friday, February 26, on Arnie Ball Court at 7 p.m. Both Bertran and Golsteyn will be on hand as the 'Dons will honor Bertran for breaking the career digs mark, prior to the match.
