FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Despite a season-high in digs and his second collegiate double-double from Michael Keegan, the IPFW men's volleyball team was unable to pull off a comeback against Quincy to open the MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) weekend. The Mastodons fell to the Hawks, 3-2, in a tough fought match (27-29, 15-25, 25-20, 25-20, 12-15).
Keegan helped the Blue and White on both sides of the ball, earning 46 assists and 13 digs. Tony Price led the 'Dons with 18 kills, hitting .325 (18-5-40), with Andrew Sellan and Kyle Fitzgerald also reaching double-digit kills, earning 15 and 11, respectively. Fitzgerald and David Frazee each earned five total block, while Sellan added four of his own.
The Mastodons came out of the gate strong, going up 11-7 against the Hawks. With the 'Dons leading 19-16, Quincy would take a ferocious comeback, earning the next six points. IPFW would hold off four set points before eventually falling 29-27 in the opening set. Price earned eight kills in the first set, while Sellan, Frazee, and Fitzgerald each had three total blocks.
The 'Dons struggled in the second set, going down 10-4 midway through and were unable to gain any significant momentum, eventually falling 25-15. Fitzgerald added four kills while Sellan nabbed four digs during the set.
The third set got off to a rough start for the Blue and White, as the 'Dons trailed 14-7, midway through. However, IPFW was able to string together a 9-2 run to tie the set at 16. Each team would trade the next eight points before the Mastodons grabbed the final five points of the set, winning 25-20. IPFW hit a combined .360 (13-4-25) during the set.
Still needing a win to force a fifth set, the Mastodons leaped to a 14-9 lead midway through. Later on, IPFW would continue to build momentum to earn a 24-18 lead, coming off a 4-1 run, and eventually take the set 25-20.
The celebration was short lived as each team went blow-for-blow in the fifth set, being knotted at eight each at the halfway point. Quincy would take the next three points and then go point-for-point with the 'Dons before taking the set 15-12.
IPFW will continue its MIVA weekend with a match against Lindenwood on Saturday, February 27 on Arnie Ball Court. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., and fans are encouraged to wear blue for the annual Blue Out.
