Mastodons Drop Final Road Game of the Regular Season
2/21/2016 6:51:00 PM | Women's Basketball
INDIANAPOLIS - In its final regular season road game, the IPFW women's basketball team dropped behind early to IUPUI and was unable to recover as the Mastodons fell 63-52.
Josie Fisher led the 'Dons with 15 points off the bench. She also led the team with four assists and two steals. Rachel Rinehart led the way for IPFW with six rebounds and nabbed two steals.
The Mastodons opened the game with a steal by Rinehart and layup from De'Jour Young. That would be the only lead of the game for IPFW as IUPUI scored 11 of the next 13 points. Fisher closed out the first period by sinking a pair of free throws to pull the 'Dons to within three, 15-12.
Once again, Fisher closed out a quarter by connecting on two free throws with 2.9 seconds left in the half, as IPFW trailed the Jags 28-20.
Keanna Gary opened the second half with a layup, pulling the Mastodons to within six, but that would be as close as they would get down the stretch. The Jaguars went on a 17-6 run to push their lead to 17 points with 2:39 to play in the third.
On three separate occasions in the fourth, IPFW cut the IUPUI lead to eight points, but after the final time, the Jaguars responded with seven straight to close out the game.
As a team, the 'Dons shot 18-of-51 (35.3%) from the floor, 6-of-16 (37.5%) from long distance, and 10-of-15 (66.7%) at the free throw line.
IPFW returns home for the final two games of the regular season. First up, the Mastodons host Summit League leader South Dakota on February 25 at 7 p.m.
