Carter's Game-High 21 Points Not Enough to Overcome South Dakota
2/25/2016 9:57:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Kamilah Carter's game-high 21 points and six 3-pointers were not enough to give the IPFW women's basketball a win over league-leading South Dakota as the Mastodons fell 90-63.
Carter had a game-high five assists and three steals to go along with her 21 points. Josie Fisher and De'Jour Young each put up 10 points for the 'Dons, while Fisher also had a game-high four steals. Courtney Ogle and Keanna Gary tied for the Mastodon lead with a game-high five rebounds.
The first quarter presented challenges for the Mastodons, including an 18-2 run from the Coyotes and eight turnovers. IPFW outscored South Dakota, 25-18, in the second quarter after scoring five points in the first. Carter put up four 3-pointers in the second quarter alone, to help the Mastodons get within 11 at the half, 41-30.
Carter drained a triple right out of the gate in the third quarter to pull IPFW within eight of South Dakota, 41-33. The Coyotes stretched their lead with a 26-5 run, spanning from the 6:21 mark of the third quarter to 8:05 left in the fourth setting the 'Dons back, 76-43. IPFW was unable to make a comeback despite a 15-8 run midway through the final quarter.
As a team, the Mastodons connected on 19-of-53 (35.8%) of their field goal attempts, including 7-of-23 (30.4%) from beyond the arc, and 18-of-24 (75.0%) from the free throw line.
IPFW plays its final regular season game February 27 at 2 p.m. against North Dakota State. Prior to the game, the Mastodons will recognize their four seniors, Kamilah Carter, Hannah Lee, Courtney Ogle, and Alexis Richards.
