IPFW Drops Regular Season Finale At IUPUI 80-77
2/27/2016 5:36:00 PM | Men's Basketball
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Darell Combs scored a game-high 31 points to lead host IUPUI to an 80-77 men's college basketball Summit League win past IPFW Saturday afternoon at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis. Redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis scored 23 points for the visiting Mastodons (23-8, 12-4 Summit League) in the regular season finale against the Jaguars (13-18, 9-7 Summit League). For the first time in program history, IPFW is the top seed for the upcoming 2016 Summit League Basketball Championships March 5-8 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, having already earned at least a share of the regular season title with South Dakota State University, who was scheduled to play its final game later Saturday night. IPFW will play an opponent to be determined in the first quarterfinal game of the league tournament Saturday, March 5 at 7 p.m. ET.
IPFW, ranked No. 14 in the latest Mid-Major Top 25, trailed early as IUPUI led 9-8 at 16:39 behind five quick points from Combs. The Mastodons, however, put together a 21-11 run to take their largest lead of the day at 29-20 with 8:43 on the first-half clock. Landis sparked the outburst with a trio of three-point field goals for nine quick points, the latter two triples from well beyond the three-point line, while junior DeAngelo Stewart/Detroit, Mich. and freshman Charles Ruise Jr./Glen St. Mary, Fla. each had three-pointers, as well. The Jaguars closed to within 29-26 at 6:15 after six more points from Combs, but the opposing guard was whistled for an unsportsmanlike technical foul after taunting the IPFW bench following his three-pointer that briefly made it a three-point game. Landis knocked down the two free throws and redshirt-freshman John Konchar/Chicago, Ill. added a layup off an assist from senior Michael Calder/Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and the visitors led 33-26 at 5:27. IUPUI, however, finished the half strong and outscored the Mastodons 15-6 to lead 41-39 at the intermission behind 21 first-half points from Combs. Landis had 16 points at the break.
IUPUI scored 10 of the first 12 points in the second half, extending its run over the two halves to 25-8, and led 51-41 with 16:51 remaining – getting two more three-pointers from Combs. IPFW used a 12-4 run to climb back to within 55-53 at 13:22, getting five quick points from senior Joe Reed/Greenwood, including a three-pointer, while Stewart made another triple during the run, as well. A pair of free throws by Reed at 11:37 made it 58-55, but the Jaguars answered with a 12-4 run of their own to take their largest lead of the contest at 70-59 with 7:02 on the clock. Down 10 (72-62) with 5:20 left, the Mastodons began battling back as they have all season long … and a three-pointer by Calder at 1:21 had the visitors within 76-74, capping yet another 12-4 run that included seven points from Calder and an impressive offensive rebound and two-handed slam dunk by Konchar. IUPUI scored on an offensive tip-in with just under a minute left to make it 78-74, but Landis was fouled on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws with 44.3-seconds left for a one-point game at 78-77. The Jaguars had a layup attempt blocked by Stewart with one-second left on the shot-clock, but managed to score on the inbounds lob-play in the lane to Marcellus Barksdale at 13.8 seconds. IPFW had two good attempts from three-point territory by Landis that would have forced overtime, but unfortunately, both shots just would not fall.
Landis led IPFW with his 23 points for his 12th 20-point game this season, including four three-pointers to increase his new school season record to 112, adding three assists while playing the full 40 minutes for the fifth consecutive game. The 12 20-point games have come over the last 20 games of the season, and the standout guard scored in double-figures in 29 of 31 games this season, while scoring nine points in each of the other two contests. Calder finished with 15 points, including 13 in the second half, adding four assists. Reed added 13 points and five rebounds, and joined the 1,000 career point club, as the fourth-year standout totals an even 1,000 career points at IPFW. Konchar contributed 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for his 12th collegiate double-double. IPFW shot 45% (25-56) from the field, including 35% (9-26) on three-pointers and 78% (18-23) at the free throw line.
Combs led IUPUI with his game-high 31 points, including 6-7 three-pointers, adding eight assists. Matt O'Leary had 12 points and a game-high nine assists for the Jaguars, while Barksdale, who made a buzzer-beating and game-winning basket at IPFW last month, added 10 points. IUPUI shot 52% (29-56) from the field, including 60% (9-15) on three-pointers and 87% (13-15) at the line.
IPFW was playing IUPUI for the 43rd time overall in a series that began during 1973-74. The Jaguars lead the series, 29-14.
IPFW completed its finest regular season as a Division I program (2001-02) with its 23-8 record, surpassing the 22-9 effort of 2013-14. It's the most regular season wins for the Mastodons in Division I, and the second 20-win season since transitioning to Division I (25-11, 2013-14).
