SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Redshirt-senior Max Landis/Indianapolis scored a game-high 24 points to lead No. 1 seed IPFW to an 86-70 quarterfinal victory past No. 8 seed South Dakota in the 2016 Summit League Men's Basketball Championship Saturday night at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Junior DeAngelo Stewart/Detroit, Mich., added 19 points for the Mastodons, who improved to 24-8, while redshirt-freshman John Konchar/Chicago, Ill. and senior Joe Reed/Greenwood each had 16 points, with Konchar grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds, as well. Tre Burnette scored 23 points for the Coyotes, who finish their season with a final record of 14-18. IPFW will play either No. 4 IUPUI or No. 5 North Dakota State in the first semifinal game of the championship tournament Monday, March 7 at 7 p.m. ET at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
IPFW trailed early at 5-2 just 1:44 into the contest after five quick points from South Dakota's Tyler Flack. The contest was close during the opening eight-plus minutes with four lead changes and three ties, the last at 15-15 with 11:21 on the first-half clock. The Mastodons took the lead for good on a three-point field goal by Landis at 11:01 (18-15) that ignited a 15-5 run for a 30-20 advantage at 5:13. Landis finished the outburst with a three-pointer, as well, adding a jumper for eight of the points, while Stewart added his own triple and Konchar along with senior Michael Calder/Fort Lauderdale, Fla. each added a pair of free throws. Stewart's third three-pointer of the half gave the top seed its largest lead of the opening 20 minutes at 39-28 (2:27), and IPFW led 39-33 at halftime. Landis had 14 first-half points, while Stewart added nine points at the break – Burnette had 11 first-half points for the Coyotes.
IPFW scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 47-33 advantage with 17:46 remaining, getting a pair of three-pointers from Reed along with a basket by Konchar. The Mastodons extended their second-half run to 23-9 for their largest lead of the night at 62-42 with 13:29 left to play. Five different players scored for IPFW, including freshman Charles Ruise Jr./Glen St. Mary, Fla. with a nice baseline dive and slam dunk, off the bench. It was still a 20-point margin at 67-47 with 10:13 left after another three-pointer by Landis, before nine-straight points by South Dakota closed the gap to 67-56 with 7:30 to go. Back-to-back baskets from Konchar, including a left-handed slam dunk, along with a three-pointer by Landis and a layup from Reed, assisted by Landis, made it 76-60 at 4:13. Stewart closed with a pair of free throws and his fifth three-pointer, followed by a driving layup from Landis and a late three-pointer by freshman Kason Harrell/Pittsburgh, Pa. to provide for the final margin.
Landis, the Summit League Player of the Year, led IPFW with his game-high 24 points for his 13th 20-point game this season, including 4-10 three-pointers to increase his new school season record to 116, adding a game-high six assists. The 13 20-point games have come over the last 21 games, and the standout guard has scored in double-figures in 29 of 31 games this season, while scoring nine points in each of the other two contests. Stewart finished with 19 points, including 5-9 three-pointers, adding seven rebounds. Konchar and Reed each added 16 points, with Konchar grabbing a game-high 16 rebounds for his 13th collegiate double-double, along with a game-high four steals and three assists. The 16 rebounds tie the sixth-highest total in Summit League Tournament history, and are the most since 1998. Reed added seven rebounds, while Ruise Jr. contributed six points. IPFW shot 51% (31-61) from the field, including 39% (12-31) on three-pointers and 80% (12-15) at the free throw line. The 12 three-pointers tied the fourth-highest total in a Summit League Tournament game. The Mastodons outscored the Coyotes 30-26 in the paint, and had a 28-25 advantage in bench points.
Burnette led South Dakota with his 23 points, adding seven rebounds. Flack had 15 points and nine rebounds for the Coyotes, while D.J. Davis added 11 points. USD shot 39% (24-62) from the field, including 35% (9-26) on three-pointers and 87% (13-15) at the line.
IPFW was playing South Dakota for the 12th time and the Mastodons now lead the series, 8-4, including three wins this year ... 85-65 in Fort Wayne at the Memorial Coliseum (1/6) and 95-82 in Vermillion at the DakotaDome (2/4).
