IPFW Falls In Series Finale At North Dakota State 15-5
4/10/2016 6:01:00 PM | Baseball
IPFW fell behind 10-0 through five innings before scoring three runs in the sixth inning courtesy of a three-run blast to right field from Valenzuela-Reece (2-3, 3 RBIs), his second home run this season. Scoring ahead of Valenzuela-Reece were senior Grant Wilson (1-2) and redshirt-freshman Alec Reuille (0-1), who had single and walked, respectively, while pinch-hitting. NDSU responded with five more runs in its half of the sixth.
The Mastodons added two more runs in the seventh inning when Herberger (1-1, 2 RBIs) contributed his two-run double to left center field that plated both junior Jackson Boyce (0-2) and senior Brandon Soat (1-3). Boyce and Soat had each drew walks to open the frame for the visitors. The game ended via the league's 10-run rule through seven innings.
Junior Tanner McAninch (0-1) took the pitching loss in relief for IPFW, facing two batters in the fourth inning and walking both, who each scored, one unearned. Redshirt-senior Brandon Pease had started for the Mastodons and tossed the first 3.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Sophomore Damian Helm pitched 1.1 innings, yielding seven hits and eight runs, six earned, with one strikeout and three walks. Redshirt-sophomore Brandon Phelps also pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four hits and five runs, three earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Adam Neal retired the only batter he faced.
NDSU was led offensively by Ben Petersen (3-4, 4 RBIs) with three hits and four RBIs, while Alex Rogers (1-1) started on the mound for the Bison and went the first 6.0 innings for the win, scattering five hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and two walks.
