IPFW Falls in Heart Breaking Five Sets at Quincy
4/2/2016 11:59:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
QUINCY, Ill. – Despite a near career high in kills from Andrew Sellan and a double-double from Alex Harthaller, the IPFW men's volleyball team fell at Quincy in five sets for the second time this season. The Mastodons fought hard, but eventually fell 25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 12-15. The loss was only the second time in 49 meetings that IPFW lost the season series to Quincy as the Mastodons are now just 2-8 on the second night of back-to-back matches.
Sellan earned a match-high 27 kills, hitting .321 (27-9-56), was two kills shy of tying his career best set earlier this season at Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras on March 10. Sellan also earned nine digs, three aces, and two total blocks. Harthaller earned his third collegiate double-double, first of the season, after nabbing 12 kills and 10 digs. Luis Bertran's 14 digs would extend his IPFW career mark to 945.
The Blue and White was caught in a dog fight as each team battled to a 10-10 tie in the fifth set. Behind a boisterous crowd on the Hawks' Senior Night, Quincy would swing momentum its way with three-straight points. The 'Dons had a chance to get back in the set after Harthaller's kill to get within two, but Quincy would walk away with a 15-12 fifth set victory for the second time this season.
IPFW opened the fourth set needing a victory, but trailing 7-5 early on. A 6-2 run from the 'Dons would give them a brief lead before the Hawks tied it at 11 midway through the set. After going up 17-13, the Mastodons began to hit a speed bump as Quincy earned three-consecutive points to stay in the set. With the fourth set tied at 22, the Blue and White would earn two-straight points to gain momentum as the 'Dons eventually took the set, 25-23, to force the decisive fifth set.
The Mastodons knew it would be a tough match entering the night as Quincy earned a 12-9 lead in the opening set. The 'Dons would go back and forth with the Hawks before grabbing a slim 18-16 lead over Quincy. With the first set tied at 19, IPFW would earn four straight points to silence the hostile crowd, eventually taking the opening set 25-20 on the heels of a 6-1 run. Sellan earned six kills on nine attempts with no errors, adding four digs for the opening set.
The Blue and White looked to take advantage of an early 7-4 lead in the second set, but Quincy continued to fight back, eventually tying the set at 14. IPFW would fall behind 17-20 and not be able to recover as the Hawks took the second set 25-22. Once again, Sellan led the Mastodon attack, earning seven kills on 12 attempts with just a single error.
Quincy came out of the break with a strong attack against the 'Dons as IPFW fell behind 3-8 early in the third set. The Mastodons would use a 7-3 run to get back in the set, only trailing 11-10 midway through. After a persistent attack, the 'Dons would knot the set at 18 and eventually take a 22-21 lead over the Hawks. However, a 4-1 run from QU would seal the third set, 25-23 for Quincy.
IPFW will wrap up the regular season with a chance to clinch a spot in the MIVA Tournament during its Chicago swing at No. 12 Loyola and No. 13 Lewis. The 'Dons need either a win or a Lindenwood loss to clinch a spot in the tournament as IPFW holds a potential tiebreaker over the Lions in head-to-head point differential. First serve for both the Loyola and Lewis matches is set for 8 p.m., Eastern Time.
