IPFW Finishes Regular Season at Ranked Loyola and Lewis

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW men's volleyball team will travel to No. 12 Loyola and No. 13 Lewis for a pair of MIVA (Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) matches as the Mastodons aim to clinch a berth in the MIVA Tournament. The Mastodons will first face Loyola on Friday, April 8, followed by Lewis on Saturday, April 9. Each match is set for 8 p.m. Eastern Time.

In the Hunt...

   IPFW is on the verge of clinching a MIVA Tournament berth for the 32nd-consecutive season. Since their inaugural season in 1981, the Mastodons have only missed the MIVA Tournament in three seasons (1981-83) and have yet to miss postseason play since 1984.

   The 'Dons have a chance to clinch a MIVA Tournament berth with a win at Loyola or Lewis. IPFW also has a chance to clinch a berth if Lindenwood falls at Ohio State on Saturday, April 9. After the Mastodons and Lions split the season series, each with a road sweep, the 'Dons hold the third tiebreaker over Lindenwood with more points in head-to-head competition.

   IPFW also has a chance to earn the No. 7 seed in the MIVA Tournament with wins at both Loyola and Lewis, combined with a McKendree loss against Quincy on Friday, April 8. In this scenario, IPFW holds the second tiebreaker over the Bearcats with more set wins over McKendree. The 'Dons earned a 3-0 sweep over the Bearcats at home, while falling 3-2 at McKendree.

Ramble On...

The Mastodons trail the all-time series against the Loyola Ramblers, 19-29, including a 10-16 record at Loyola. IPFW is 8-21 when facing a ranked Loyola squad and have not beat a ranked Ramblers team since February 24, 2012, when the 'Dons topped No. 14 Loyola in five sets in Chicago. Loyola has controlled the series in recent years as IPFW has not topped the Ramblers since a five set thriller in Chicago on February 20, 2013.

A Dime a Dozen...

IPFW holds an 8-20 record all-time when facing the 12th-ranked team nationally. The last victory for the Mastodons over the 12th-ranked team came against George Mason in Fort Wayne on January 25, 2008 when the 'Dons overcame the Patriots in five sets. IPFW is 1-2 when facing No. 12 Loyola with the lone victory coming in 3-2 fashion on February 2, 2007.

On the Fly...

The Blue and White are 24-30 all-time against Lewis with an 8-17 record in road matches. When facing a ranked Flyers team, the 'Dons are 16-27, with the last win coming against No. 10 Lewis in five sets on February 20, 2014. The Mastodons last road win over Lewis was in 3-1 fashion when the 'Dons topped the 14th-ranked Flyers on April 8, 2011.

Lucky No. 13...

The Blue and White are 24-23 all-time against the 13th-ranked team nationally with the last win coming at Ball State, 3-2, last season on February 5. IPFW is 1-1 against No. 13 Lewis entering the weekend. The lone match in which the 'Dons beat No. 13 Lewis was February 14, 2004.

Land of Lincoln...

IPFW is 42-46 all-time in Illinois, while holding a 24-13 record against teams excluding Lewis and Loyola in the Prairie State. The Blue and White are 10-16 at Loyola, while sitting 8-17 at Lewis.

The 'Dons are a combined 11-17 when playing in Chicago. Additionally, IPFW is a combined 10-19 in Romeoville, Illinois.

Staying Active...

Luis Bertran is the active career leader in both digs (945) and digs per set (2.46) amongst Division I participants, while sitting fourth overall amongst all divisions for career digs.

Andrew Sellan ranks second for Division I active career leaders in kills (1,317) and fifth in kills per set (3.62), while sitting second in both Division I attempts (2,924) and third in attempts per set (8.03). Amongst all divisions, Sellan is fifth in kills and attempts, while sitting sixth in attempts per set and seventh in kills per set. Only Mike Michelau of Erskine is above Sellan in Division I active career leaders in kills (1,578) and attempts (3,407).

Diggin' Up History...

With his performance against No. 8 Loyola on February 20, senior libero Luis Bertran broke the IPFW career mark for most digs, previously held by All-American Jay Golsteyn (1986-89). Golsteyn held the record for 27 years when he accumulated 816 digs during his collegiate career.

Michael Keegan is 22nd in assists per set (9.55) while David Frazee is 21st in blocks per set (1.04).

On the Attack...

With his performance at No. 10 Penn State (Jan. 23), Andrew Sellan became the 18th men's volleyball student-athlete in IPFW history to reach 1,000 career kills. Additionally, Sellan became just the seventh Mastodon to reach the 1,000 kill milestone in the rally scoring era (2001-present). Hector Soto (1997-2000) leads IPFW career kills with 2,193.

Solid as a Rock...

Head coach Ryan "Rock" Perrotte is in his 17th year with IPFW, and first as the head coach. During his time as a Mastodon, Perrotte has been a part of 448 matches, going 266-185 (.590). As a student-athlete, Perrotte helped the 'Dons to a 22-5 record in 1999, winning the MIVA Tournament and reaching the NCAA Final Four against Long Beach State (L, 3-2). As the assistant coach, Perrotte helped the Blue and White win back-to-back MIVA Tournaments and reaching the NCAA Final Four in 2006 and 2007. During those seasons, the 'Dons went a combined 46-15, reaching the NCAA Championship against UC Irvine in 2007.
