IPFW Rallies For Second-Straight Win Past Purdue 6-5
5/17/2016 10:36:00 PM | Baseball
Purdue scored five runs during its first two at bats to take an early 5-0 advantage. IPFW, however, battled back with a run in the second inning, three more runs in the third and two runs in the sixth inning for the one-run margin of victory in comeback fashion. It was the second win against the Boilermakers in a week, as the Mastodons took a 4-3 win in West Lafayette on May 10.
In the second, Trevino (2-3, 2 RBIs) led off the at bat with a single and scored with one out via an RBI single by sophomore Zak Kellogg (1-3, RBI). In the third, junior Jackson Boyce (1-4) opened the at bat with an opposite field double down the left field line, and scored with two outs on a run-scoring single by Kaiser (2-4, 2 RBIs). Trevino promptly followed with a two-run home run to right center field, scoring Kaiser, as well. It was Trevino's 11th home run this season, good for second-best on the team.
In the sixth, Kaiser led off with his Summit League and team-leading 14th home run, a solo blast to left field to tie the game at 5-5. The 14 home runs are also the most by a shortstop in Division I this year. Trevino followed at the plate and was walked, and after IPFW loaded the bases with one out, redshirt-sophomore Shannon Baker (1-3, RBI) hit a sacrifice fly RBI to left field to score Trevino with what proved to be the game-winning run.
Senior Kyle Orwig started for IPFW and pitched the first 5.1 innings, scattering eight hits and five runs, four earned, with two strikeouts and five walks. Ley (3-2) tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for the mound win, yielding one hit with one strikeout and one walk. Junior Tanner McAninch pitched a scoreless inning, allowing no hits with no strikeouts and one walk. Sebastian (2) tossed the final scoreless inning for the Mastodons to get the save, his second this season – both against Purdue, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Purdue was led offensively by Harry Shipley (3-4) with three hits, while Nick Dalesandro (1-5, 2 RBIs) and Jacson McGowan (1-4, 2 RBIs) each had two RBIs. Jacob Preston (0-2) pitched 2.2 innings of middle relief in defeat, allowing one hit and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and two walks.
