MACOMB, Ill. - Demitra Burns hit her second home run in as many days, but the IPFW softball team was unable to take the third game of its series at Western Illinois, falling 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Mary Ellen McKee Stadium in Macomb, Illinois. The loss ends the season for the Mastodons with an overall record of 11-40 and 2-16 in Summit League play.
Sierra Miranda led the 'Dons on the day, going 2 for 3 at the plate. Burns had a solo home run while Jenna Balthazor collected the other hit for the Mastodons.
Balthazor led off the game with a single to right-center. She advanced from first to third on a failed pickoff attempted by the Leatherneck catcher, but was left stranded there as the next three batters were retired.
IPFW jumped out to the early lead when Burns connected on her second home run in the last two games, her third of the season. The next three Mastodon batters reached base via a walk, error and hit by pitch. The 'Dons were unable to bring home another run though, leaving the bases loaded.
The Mastodons loaded the bases again in the top of the third with two outs after a pair of walks to Jessica Murray and Kelly Pevely, before Miranda singled up the middle. IPFW was unable to push across a run as the final out of the inning was recorded.
WIU took the lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out, two-run home run. The Leathernecks added an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth with a one-out double.
Miranda singled with one out in the top of the sixth, but the 'Dons were unable to bring her home. IPFW was retired in order in the top of the seventh to bring the season to a close.
In her final game in the circle as a Mastodon, Sarah Lazarowich threw a complete game, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out two Western Illinois batters.
