FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- IPFW baseball standout Evan Miller was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 22nd round of the 2016 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft on Saturday during the final day of the three-day, 40-round amateur draft. The 654th overall selection, he becomes just the third player in school history to ever be drafted by MLB. Evan is the son of David and Sherree Miller of LaPorte.
The 6-2, 185-pound right-handed pitcher was 4-5 with a 6.35 earned run average and 71 strikeouts (8.83) in 15 appearances, including 14 starts, 72.1 innings and one save as a sophomore with the Mastodons this season. Miller led the pitching staff in strikeouts and batters struck out looking (24), while second on the team in starts and innings pitched.
During his two-year, 31-appearance career at IPFW, he was 10-10 with a 5.38 ERA, 165 strikeouts (9.75), 152.1 innings and two saves -- making 29 starts with one complete game. Miller owns school records for season starts (15, 2015) and strikeouts (94, 2015), while ranking third in career strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings, and eighth in career starts and wins.
The only other two previous IPFW draft selections were Dan Mathews (26th round) in 1998 by Milwaukee and Ryan Steinbach (20th round) in 2005 by Baltimore.
IPFW finished 2016 with a school-record of 33-26, its first 30-win season, fifth 25-win season and 12th 20-win season in program history. In addition to the school-record 33 wins, the Mastodons posted their first back-to-back winning seasons since 1998-99, winning 20 of their final 27 games. A late 12-game winning streak catapulted IPFW into its second-straight Summit League Tournament championship game appearance.
