Mastodons Sweep Final Day of the Fort Wayne Invitational

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Fort Wayne women's volleyball team battled back to defeat its in-state rival Ball State 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 28-26, 15-5) and earn a sweep on the final day (Sat., Aug. 27) of the Fort Wayne Invitational Sponsored by Hyatt Place. The Mastodons finished the tournament as the runner-up after defeating Youngstown State 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-22) earlier in the day.
In the first match of the day, the 'Dons fell behind early as Youngstown State scored the first three points of the match. Fort Wayne fought back, tying the set at 18-18, before using a 5-2 run to take the opening frame.
The Mastodons scored the first four points of set number two and then went on a 7-1 run midway through put it away for good. Trailing 7-6 in the third set, the 'Dons rallied with a 6-2 run to take the lead for good and earn the sweep over the Penguins.
Natasha Medic and Lauren Hoffman led the team both offensively and defensively with 13 kills and six blocks, respectively. The duo was on fire all match as Hoffman hit .684 and Medic .550. Madison Jaqua dished out a match-high 38 assists while Olivia Hahn had a match-high 19 digs.
Fort Wayne and Ball State battled it out in the opening set of the nightcap as the teams exchanged nine leads and 18 tie scores. With the score knotted 22-22, the Cardinals tallied the final three points to take the first set. A five-point run early in the second set gave Ball State the lead for good heading into the third.
After the Cardinals scored four straight early in the third set, the Mastodons fought back with a 10-2 run to take the lead and eventually the set. Ball State opened the fourth with three straight points but once again the 'Dons came back, tying the score 16-16. It took extra points, but Fort Wayne closed it out with three straight points and forced a decisive set.
The Mastodons took a commanding 7-2 lead in the final set and never looked back as they cruised to the win over their in-state rivals, while hitting .615 in the fifth frame.
Hoffman again led the 'Dons with 15 kills. Somer Johnson earned her second double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 digs. Jaqua finished with 34 assists while Hahn added a match-high 27 digs. Natalie Seiler put down a match-high eight blocks, including two solo.
For their efforts on the weekend, Hahn and Hoffman were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Fort Wayne returns to action when it travels to Western Michigan on Tuesday (Aug. 30) for a 7 p.m. match.
