Mastodons Fall Twice on Opening Day of Invitational

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Fort Wayne women's volleyball team dropped a pair of match during the opening day of the Toledo/Asics Invitational, falling to Marshall 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-21) and Toledo 3-1 (25-21, 25-13, 24-26, 25-22).
In the opener, Elizabeth Fuerst led Fort Wayne with a career-high 10 kills. Lauren Hoffman added eight while Somer Johnson finished with seven and Nicole Rightnowar had six. Madison Jaqua had a team-high 17 assists. Victoria Mills earned her first career double-double with 10 assists and a team-high 10 digs.
With the scored tied 17-17 in the first set, Marshall scored the next six points to take opening set. The Mastodons were unable to get the offense going in the second as the Thundering Herd used an early 10-4 lead to its advantage. Fort Wayne put up a fight in the final set, leading 16-15, but a three-point run by Marshall gave them the match.
Rightnowar led the 'Dons in the nightcap with a season- and match-high 18 kills. Jaqua finished with 16 assists while Mills added 15. Olivia Hahn led the defense with 12 digs. Je'Bria Green led the Mastodons with three blocks to go along with five kills in her first collegiate match.
Tied 9-9 in the opening set, Toledo scored eight of the next 10 points to win the frame. A 7-0 run midway through the second set put the score out of reach for the 'Dons.
The third set was a back-and-forth affair as the two sides exchange five leads and 15 ties. With Fort Wayne leading 20-18, the Rockets battled back with six straight points to have match-point. The Mastodons refused to give in as they scored six straight of their own, including three straight aces from Clair Marshall, to win the set.
The 'Dons nearly pulled off another comeback in the fourth set, trailing 19-13 and tying the score 22-22, before Toledo took the final three points of the match.
