Fort Wayne MVB Falls to No. 8 UC Irvine

IRVINE, Calif. - The Fort Wayne men's volleyball team dropped its season opener at No. 8 UC Irvine 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 25-11) on Tuesday (Jan. 3) at the Bren Events Center.
In the first set, the 'Dons tied the score at four apiece, but could not bite all the way back after a five-point run by the Anteaters. The remainder of the set stayed around a five-point deficit.
The second stanza showed strong Mastodon play, when the 'Dons opened up a 18-15 lead before Irvine went on an 11-3 run to finish the set.
The Mastodons took the third set thanks to a three-point run capped off by a Pelegrin Vargas kill to make the score 21-19. Vargas also made the set-clinching kill in his collegiate debut off an assist from Michael Keegan. The Mastodons outhit the Anteaters .333 to .200, and only had three errors to Irvine's seven in the third set. The 'Dons also had a match-high 13 kills in the third set.
Keegan ended the night with 31 assists and five digs. Vargas led the Mastodons with 10 kills, while Colton Stone and Tony Price chipped in nine and six respectively. Jack Carlson logged nine digs for Fort Wayne in his first action as a Mastodon.
The Mastodons continue their trip out west with three matches in two days, when they face No. 4 Long Beach State, No. 14 California State Northridge and No. 12 UC Santa Barbara in the UCSB ASICS Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 6-7).
