Mastodons Start Off UCSB Invite with Loss to LBSU

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Fort Wayne Mastodons fell to fourth-ranked Long Beach State 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-21) in the UCSB ASICS Invitational on Friday (Jan. 6) at the Thunderdome.
The 'Dons could not overcome a powerful Beach team that hit with a .366 percentage. The 49ers had four players have eight or more points, setting up for a balanced attack in the comfort of their own state.
Pelegrin Vargas and Colton Stone ended the match as the 'Dons' kill leaders, both with nine. Vargas also led Fort Wayne in points for the second match in a row, with 11.5. Michael Keegan finished with 19 of the team's 27 assists. Jack Carlson led the Mastodons in digs with seven. Richie Diedrich had two of the 'Dons' four blocks.
Vargas had a service ace in the second set that gave the Mastodons their biggest lead of the set, putting Fort Wayne up 11-8 after a three-point run. Subsequently, Beach went on a 12-5 run, before Fort Wayne responded with another three-point run capped off by a kill from Vargas.
The Mastodons fell the 0-2, while the 49ers improve to 1-0.
The 'Dons continue action in the UCSB ASICS Invitational with a matchup against No. 14 CSUN on Friday (Jan. 6) at 10 p.m. EST. On Saturday they face off against the hosting UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. The Gauchos are the 12th ranked team in the country.
