
Despite Two Extra Point Sets, Mastodons Fall to CSUN

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Despite pushing the final two sets into extra points, the Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fell to No. 14 California State Northridge 3-1 (25-11, 20-25, 30-28, 29-27) on Friday (Jan. 6).
In the first set, CSUN took an early 16-8 lead and finished the set on a 9-3 run. The Matadors only had one error, hitting .667 in the first set.
Following a poor first set, the Mastodons took the second by hitting .355, while CSUN only managed .227. Fort Wayne held the Matadors to its season-low .227 hitting percentage and had a 16-8 kill advantage in the second stanza.
The third and fourth sets proved winnable by the Mastodons, as the 'Dons hit .310, even with the Matadors. The 'Dons held a 21-18 lead in the fourth set, but the Matadors pushed the set into extras.
Pelegrin Vargas led the 'Dons in kills with 14, while Richie Diedrich and Colton Stone also had double-digit kill evenings with 13 and 10 respectively. Stone also recorded nine digs, while Jack Carlson contributed seven. Michael Keegan continued setting the pace with 39 assists.
The Matadors improve to 4-0, while the Mastodons fall to 0-3.
The Mastodons conclude the UCSB ASICS Invitational with a match against the hosting team, No. 12 UC Santa Barbara, on Saturday (Jan. 7). Fort Wayne returns home for a match against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Friday, Jan. 13 at the Gates Center.
