Fort Wayne Topples Quincy in Five Sets
2/24/2017 10:50:00 PM | Men's Volleyball
QUINCY, Ill. - Behind double-doubles from Michael Keegan and Pelegrin Vargas, the Fort Wayne men's volleyball team took down the Quincy Hawks in five sets (24-26, 25-19, 26-24, 20-25, 16-14) in the Pepsi Arena on Friday night (Feb. 24).
In the first set, the 'Dons held 12-9 and 15-12 leads, forcing a pair of Quincy timeouts. The Hawks responded with a late 9-6 run to take the set.
Graydon Schroeder caught fire on the defensive side early in the second set, recording four blocks (two solo) in the first eight points of the set. The rest of the 'Dons followed suit with a dominant performance from the start of the set. An early 5-1 lead set the tone, and the lead was stretched to eight later on with a seven-point Mastodon run on Schroeder's service. Fort Wayne held the Hawks to a .000 hitting percentage in the second set, and also led in kills 13-8.
Scott McNerney tied his career-high 12 digs midway through the third set and would hold that total for the match. The third went back and forth, and the 'Dons could only open a three-point lead at 10-7 before the Hawks had a three-point lead of their own at 19-16. Kyle Fitzgerald's service led to a four-point run for the 'Dons to close out and take the set. Fort Wayne outhit the Hawks in set three .423 to .393.
The Hawks opened the fourth set with a 7-1 lead, but the Mastodons chipped away at that lead with a 16-10 run, capped off by Vargas' 18th kill of the night to reach a 17-all tie. This kill marked his career-high. The Hawks took the fourth with a 3-0 run to close the set.
The final stanza stayed back-and-forth, as the 'Dons never got more than two points ahead. When the score was 13-13, the Hawks scored, but the point was overturned as they were out of service rotation. Vargas recorded another kill, and the match concluded on a Quincy attacking error.
Vargas led the Mastodons in kills with 22, for a .341 percentage. He pitched in 10 digs to round out his first career double-double. Keegan had 43 assists and 10 digs for his third double-double of the season, while also recording a career-high six kills. Alex Dickmann contributed 10 digs and seven kills.
Fort Wayne improves to 5-13, 2-5 MIVA after snapping a five-match skid, while Quincy falls to 3-11, 1-7 MIVA. The Mastodons continue their nine-match road stretch with a match at Lindenwood on Saturday at 7 p.m. CST in Saint Charles, Missouri.
