Fort Wayne Men's Volleyball Falls to Lindenwood in Five Sets

SAINT CHARLES, Mo. - Despite Michael Keegan's second consecutive double-double, the Fort Wayne men's volleyball team fell to Lindenwood in five sets (19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-23,18-16) in the Hyland Arena on Saturday (Feb. 25)
In the first set, the Mastodons took an 8-4 lead, and the Lions would not creep within two points. Graydon Schroeder finished with four kills on five attempts for a .800 hitting percentage in the first. The 'Dons outhit the Lions .278 to .114 in to take the first.
The Lions hit well in the second set, reaching a .296 clip. Colton Stone and Alex Dickmann had four kills each in the second for Fort Wayne.
Richie Diedrich came off the bench to have four kills in the third set. The Mastodons jumped out to a 8-3 lead behind a four-serve trip for Michael Keegan, but it was followed by a six-point Lion run. The 'Dons stayed tough, and went on a 3-0 run to take a 12-11 lead. A later 6-2 run put the 'Dons up 24-22, and a kill by Pelegrin Vargas put away the set.
The fourth set remained in Fort Wayne's favor throughout, as the 'Dons led 23-21, but Lindenwood finished on a 4-0 run to force a fifth set.
Diedrich took over the early portion of the final set, earning three kills in the first eight Mastodon points. Stone came to play late, as he earned two straight kills, followed by a service ace to gain a 13-11 lead. Dickmann's kill after a 3-0 Lindenwood run evened the score at 14-all, and gave him his second double-double of the year. The Lions finished the match on their third attempt at match point.
Diedrich finished with 13 kills for a .600 percentage and Schroeder hit down nine for .353. Schroeder also had five blocks to lead the Mastodons. Dickmann had 12 digs for a career high. Jack Carlson got the start at libero and recorded a career-high 15 digs. Keegan finished with 45 assists and 11 digs to round out his double-double.
Fort Wayne falls to 5-14, 2-5 MIVA. Lindenwood improves to 1-13, 1-8 MIVA. The Mastodons take a break from MIVA competition next week, as they visit Lourdes on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
