Western Illinois Takes Rubber Game 4-1

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois edged the Fort Wayne baseball team 4-1 on Sunday (March 19) afternoon at Alfred Boyer Stadium in the series finale between the two clubs.
Western Illinois went up 2-0 after single runs in the first and third innings. The Mastodons cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Jacob Dickson. It would be the only run the 'Dons would score on the day. Western Illinois added to their lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Fort Wayne's best chance to cut into the deficit came in the eighth inning. Fort Wayne put runners at the corners with one out, but the rally was halted by an inning ending double play.
Mitchell Ley threw five innings in a losing effort. He is now 1-3. Cameron Boyd didn't allow a base runner in three innings of relief.
Western Illinois starter Javin Drake moved his record to 1-4 after allowing one run in 7.1 innings. Nate Westfahl threw the final 1.2 to earn his first save of the year.
Western Illinois improves to 3-14 (2-1 Summit League). The Mastodons fall to 4-14 (1-2 Summit League). The 'Dons return to action on Friday (March 24) against Omaha.
