Mastodons Drop Pitchers' Duel to Panthers
4/18/2017 8:14:00 PM | Softball
CHARLESTON, Ill. - The Fort Wayne softball squad dropped a pitchers' duel to Eastern Illinois 1-0.
Darby Shaw took the hard-luck loss after throwing a complete game, allowing one run while scattering five hits and striking out three.
All four Mastodon hits came by different players in Brooke Imel, Demitra Burns, Lauren Watson and Jenna Balthazor. Imel also stole a base.
Both teams threatened in the first, with each putting two runners on. Watson led off the game with a single and Sierra Miranda followed by reaching on an error before the next three batters were retired. The Panthers put their first two batters on, but Mastodon catcher Maria Palmegiani threw both runners out, including Kayla Bear, who was caught for only the second time in 31 attempts this season.
Eastern Illinois scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the third on a two-out single. Fort Wayne threatened in the top of the seventh with two outs on back-to-back hits from Burns and Balthazor, but a pop out to left field ended the game.
The Mastodons have a bye from Summit League play this weekend and return to action Tuesday, April 25 at home against Bowling Green.
